Robert began his career as a Prize Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and went on to become a partner in a management consultancy. Today he divides his time between consulting independently and writing.


He is the author of two books of non-fiction that apply philosophy, psychoanalysis and literature to everyday life. Breakfast with Socrates, the Kindle No. 1 Bestseller, has been translated into seventeen languages. The follow-up is Driving with Plato, out now in the UK, the US, Italy, Lithuania and Portugal.

Robert’s academic works include Derrida and Autobiography and Death-Drive: Freudian Hauntings in Literature and Art. His latest monograph, ‘On Modern Poetry: From Theory to Total Criticism’ comes out in July 2012.


Robert has written for The Independent, Intelligent Life, Psychologies and the Evening Standard, and been profiled in The Sunday Telegraph Magazine, Time Out and The Observer. He has a column on everyday dilemmas in the Sunday Times Magazine, and reviews books for the Culture section. He also broadcasts for BBC television and radio.


In recent years, Robert has spoken at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Hayward Gallery, the French Institute, The Royal Society of Arts, the British Library, the London School of Economics, and the Wilderness Festival. Book and lecture tours have taken him to Amsterdam, Bucharest, Lisbon, Madrid, New York, Oslo, San Francisco, Seattle, Vilnius and Zurich.


Robert’s work as a management consultant involves working with executives on strategy and change. In 14 years of consulting, his clients have included the Foreign Office, Pearson and Schroders. He also coaches a number of chief executives. He is now writing a book for business leaders.


Robert is a Fellow of the London Graduate School, and has recently been appointed a Trustee of the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology.


Having lived in Oxford, Perpignan and West Hollywood, Robert has returned to his native south London, where he lives with his wife. He has three daughters.
